Shopping Cart Software Tutorial - Shipping
Multiple shipping calculation methods are available. The most accurate is the 'shipping by weight' method which allows for UPS/FedEx and USPS calculations.
1. Per item shipping
This option allows you to specify a shipping fee per item. For example, item A has
a shipping charge of $2.50. You can specify a separate per item fee for same-country
and international shipments. If you will not be using this shipping calculation
method, simply leave those fields blank when building your
catalog pages.
2. Flat rate shipping
This is the simplest of all methods. The same shipping amount is used,
regardless of items (or quantity) in the shopping cart at the time of checkout.
3. Scale based shipping
This option calculates shipping cost based on the total order amount. For example,
you could instruct the shopping cart software to charge $5.00 in shipping for
orders totaling $30 or less. For orders between $30 and $50 you could have the
cart software add $7.50 shipping and so on. The cart system allows for two scales,
one for same country shipments, and one for international orders.
4. Shipping by weight
This option will be the most accurate in most cases. It uses the weight of all items
in the cart and the ship-from and ship-to zip codes to calculate rates for the below carriers.
United Parcel Service (UPS) | Federal Express (FedEx) | US Postal Service (USPS) |
UPS Ground Service | FedEx Ground Service | USPS Priority Mail |
UPS 3 Day Select | FedEx Express Saver | USPS Express Mail |
UPS 2nd Day Air | FedEx 2 Day
UPS Next Day Saver | FedEx Standard Overnight
UPS Next Day Air | FedEx Priority Overnight
|
As you can see, the cart software allows you to offer several shipping services to your shoppers.
You can offer as few or as many options as you wish. The shoppers then select from the list of shipping options you make available.
The online shopping software also allows you to add surcharges or to discount the calculated shipping
fee. UPS & Fedex can charge fuel surcharges (a % added to estimate), you can instruct the cart to
add the same %. Fixed amounts can also be added.
For Some carriers, a fixed amount surcharge may apply for residential delivery addresses. You can
instruct the cart software to add this to shipping amounts also.
In case you wanted to run a special (for example) and lower calculated UPS fees by say 50%
or deduct $2.50, this too is possible. You simple tell the software which (fixed amount or %)
discounts to apply.
Please note that while every attempt is made to make these estimates as accurate as
possible, they are just that, estimates.
